Cinema Bizarre Exclusive Interview The Berlin-based quintet is ready to glam up the States.
Cozying up next to each other on a couch in an Interscope Records conference room, Cinema Bizarre gave their opinion on why their music is neither "cinematic" nor "bizarre," what sort of '80s music the band is collectively inspired by, what it's been like touring with Lady Gaga, what she's like when she's not in the spotlight, why their song "After the Rain" is inspired by Edward Scissorhands and what else we can expect from them in the near future.
When German pop-rock quartet Tokio Hotel came to the States in 2007, they brought something that hasn't been seen in the American music scene in quite some time. Several of the members were androgynous, toying with the soft minds of U.S. listeners focused more on visual aesthetics than music itself. The band drew attention to themselves by bringing back the glam rock that classic musicians like David Bowie and Elton John had popularized back in the '70s, using the past as inspiration for their image and tunes. But where Tokio Hotel catered to both their native Germany and U.S. fans by recording albums in both German and English, Berlin-based quintet Cinema Bizarre has bypassed the German catering with the Europe-only release of their English language debut Final Attraction, the first full-length album from this group of gender-bending boys with a similar knack for glam-pop.
Cinema Bizarre is set to release their sophomore album Toyz over in Europe in May, but the quintet is gearing up for their introduction to American audiences with the 2009 release of their Stateside debut. Though the band doesn't have a title picked for the album yet, their first North American full-length release is promised to be similar to their previous albums, filled with glam-pop gems that are more "theatrical" than "cinematic." Of the singles that the band has already released overseas, "Love Songs (They Kill Me)" and "Escape to the Stars" pretty much embody the Cinema Bizarre sound, with lead singer Strify cooing over bombastic new wave compositions played by guitarist Yu, bassist Kiro, drummer Shin and keyboardist Romeo. The band has already released an exclusive Hot Topic EP ahead of their album's release, and with a spot as opener on Lady Gaga current U.S. tour and an upcoming solo trek around the country, Cinema Bizarre are bringing some more of that German goodness to the States before their Stateside debut glams up listeners across the nation.
And for a band as mysterious and sparkly as Cinema Bizarre, you'd be surprised to know how these five comrades first joined up as a team. The guys first met on the internet based on their common love of Visual Kei, a J-Pop subculture consisting of the same ideals on which Cinema Bizarre is based (androgyny, glam, pop). After meeting up at an anime/manga convention, the quintet formed as Cinema Bizarre with ex-member Luminor in place of Romeo, recording their debut album Final Attraction that reached the top 10 over in Germany when released back in 2007. The band began touring around Europe, growing in popularity as their single "Love Songs (They Kill Me)" climbed the charts and helped the band become a heralded German treasure. Cinema Bizarre was forced to part ways with Luminor when his health took a turn for the worse, but the band persevered by adding Romeo to the mix last September. Since then, the group has begun to make waves in the U.S. with their recent inclusion on Lady Gaga's Fame Tour, a slot that's not only introduced them to a massive new audience, but set the stage for their '09 invasion.
Cinema Bizarre is currently focused on promoting their forthcoming albums, with the upcoming release of "My Obsession," the first single off the European release of Toyz. But while the band made their first trip to New York City, they figured they'd take some time out of their day to speak with Kiwibox Editor Steven about what American audiences can expect on their U.S. debut when it drops later this year.
